There is no independent ranking, so the figures are the organisers' own. Karibu KiliFair in Arusha calls itself East Africa's largest tourism expo and states 600+ exhibitors and 1,800+ international travel agents, while WTM Africa in Cape Town lists 781 exhibitors and 266 hosted buyers from 66 countries. Africa's Travel Indaba in Durban, owned by South African Tourism, describes itself as the most formidable platform on the continent.
A hosted buyer programme is a scheme in which a trade show organiser pays some or all of a qualified buyer's costs, such as flights, accommodation and transfers, in return for the buyer attending a set number of pre-scheduled meetings with exhibitors. Africa's Travel Indaba, for example, asks hosted buyers to attend at least 10 appointments a day, and WTM Africa selects senior buyers with purchasing authority and evidence of business in Africa.
Yes, travel agents and tour operators can apply to attend Africa's Travel Indaba as hosted or non-hosted buyers, and each person must submit an individual application for approval. For the 2026 show, international non-hosted buyers who registered by 29 April 2026 attended free, and local trade visitors paid ZAR 970. The 2027 show runs from 11 to 13 May 2027 at the Durban ICC.
Karibu KiliFair states that its fam trip partners offer more than 120 seats for registered international buyers, and the Magical Kenya Travel Expo's 2026 hosted buyer package included a five-day fam trip. Meetings Africa gives international hosted buyers a pre- or post-show tour, Essence of Africa lets hosted buyers apply for a pre-event Zanzibar educational programme, and We Are Africa offers pre- and post-tour programmes. WTM Africa states that pre- and post-show tours are not guaranteed.
Travel agents usually reach a trade show fam trip by registering as a buyer first and then applying for a seat or being allocated a tour as part of a hosted buyer place. At Karibu KiliFair, registered buyers apply online for their top three fam itineraries, and at Meetings Africa the pre- or post-show tour is part of the international hosted buyer package.
